Welcome to the Clifftown Theatre & Studios website.

Built in 1865 with its magnificent gothic bell tower and stunning fascia, Clifftown United Reformed Church has been one of the finest sites in Southend for over a century. Purchased by the University of Essex in 2008, it has been transformed into a stunning state-of-the-art Theatre and performance space, and was awarded the Southend Society's 'Clifftown Award' for 2010. With 5 rehearsal studios and a dynamic theatre space, Clifftown Theatre & Studios has given rise to a diverse range of shows, workshops, summer schools, community events and professional touring productions, and is home to the world renowned East 15 Acting School.


Welcome back! Following on from what proved to be a fantastic Spring Season we now have news of our next spectacular offerings, and what a season it will be! From sword fights and Greek myth, to gypsies and hunchbacks, this season will definitely tantalise those theatrical thirsts! 


Southend Film Festival

Mon 28th April: 7:00pm

Returning to Clifftown for the 4th year, join us at this FREE event to see up-and-coming actors, directors and filmmakers at work in this unique and diverse evening of film shorts!


In the Tea Leaves of the Titans

Thurs 8th – Sat 10th May: 7.30pm & 2.30pm Sat matinee

Looking into the Tea Leaves of the Titans, the King discovers that he is in imminent danger and so passes the crown to his obligatorily evil brother.   Now, with the help of a band of misfits, it is up to the King's estranged son to return to the castle and save the day! A funny and fun-filled comedy adventure.


Worlds Apart

Thurs 15th - Sat 17th May: 7.30pm & 2.30pm Sat matinee

Three short plays devised by the company. This illuminating trio explores the territory of intercultural and multicultural performance; weaving together the known and unknown. Crossing continents, eras and themes; storytelling through humans, puppets and masks, these unique performances will delight and entertain.

All pieces will be staged at each performance


The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Thurs 29th - Sat 31st May: 7.30pm & 2.30pm Sat matinee

The classic gothic tale of Quasimodo and Esmeralda give the Physical Theatre actors the opportunity to explore all their skills. With the acclaimed director, Gary Sefton,  at the helm, returning after the success of last years ‘Gormenghast’, this is sure to be a show not to miss!


Act Locally

Thurs 5th - Sat 7th June: Thurs @ 6:30pm, Fri @ 7:30pm and Sat @ 2:30pm

A season of four Community Plays created with local families, residents of York Rd, and St Christopher’s, Westborough and Cecil Jones schools.

 Exploring perceptions; of routine, of expectations, of family … and tigers.
